International Music DayInternational Music Day was initiated in 1975 by Lord Yehudi Menuhin, then President of the International Music Council, to encourage the promotion of musical art among all sections of society. He said: Music Day “will constitute a major achievement among our activities and become an event for the propagation of greater knowledge of our art, arid for the strengthening of the bonds of peace and friendship between peoples through music”.

This year, the IMC Secretariat in Paris was celebrating the International Music Day by staging an exhibition at UNESCO featuring projects and initiatives of IMC members worldwide, and by organizing a concert with world-renowned Jazz musicians.

Maria from Odessa, ukraineMaria is 18 years old, and lives in Odessa, Ukraine.

She is 5′ 7″ tall, and weighs 112lbs.

Maria is a college student, and doesn’t speak much English.

She has hazel eyes and black hair.

When asked to tell about her character, Maria said: “I’m Maria, Masha, Marie. I have one name, but in different expressions. I’m young and naive but at the same time mature and serious. I’m the only child of my parents and to be honest I’m a little bit spoiled. I’m a lover of everything sweet and beautiful, fashionable and tasty. Why I joined all these qualities? Because everything beautiful brings sweetness and calmness to one’s soul and it’s an inseparable part of life.

I live with my parents whom I love and respect not only because they are my parents and they have given me a life, but because they brought me up and gave me some way in this life. I have based my views on them, I have relied on them, and they taught me what led to my search for happiness like theirs. I have no doubt that I will find my happiness.”

Russia was involved in film making as early as most other Western nations. The history of Russian cinema production started in 1895.

Initially, it was declared that film would be the ideal artform for communist Russia because of its populist potential and facility in propaganda. Stalin’s era created only two films: Aleksandr Nevsky and Ivan Groznyi. These films were made during the Patriotic War when censorship was slightly loosened.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s Soviet cinema again flowered. The 1980s saw a diversification of subject matter. Touchy issues could now be discussed openly. The collapse of the Soviet Union brought a virtual end to quality cinema in Russia and the other republics. The new Russia’s cinema is more profit-oriented, specializing in low-quality action and comedy.

A Russian airbourne trooper enjoying VDV DayRussia has a multitude of (sometimes strange) “holidays”. We’ll post a list of them here soon. Meantime, 2nd of August each year, Russia celebrates the day of Russian Airborne Troops! They call it “VDV Day”, VDV being the abbreviation of Vozdushno-Desantnie Voiska (airborne troops in Russian).

During the celebrations all paratroopers put on their uniforms or striped vests, gather in public places (in Moscow’s Gorky Park, for example), drink much alcohol and traditionally swim in the fountains (where swimming is traditionally forbidden) and shout “for VDV!”.

Sometimes drunken troopers get themselves into confrontations with militia or security guards and also with people from the southern countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, or just those people who haven’t served in the army.

The true purpose of this day has become rather clouded over recent years, with real troopers (those who have served in Afghanistan etc) mingling with other “soldiers” who have simply done a couple of years service stationed at an army barracks, and those who choose to wear a number of medals to decorate their uniforms - upon closer examination those medals date back to World War 2 and were probably handed down from their fathers, or bought in second-hand shops.

Something we noticed today when we were arranging a personal tour for a client - Did you know that only one commercial airline flies into Kharkov in Ukraine from Europe? Austrian Airlines fly there regularly, routing through their Vienna hub, and have good connections to the rest of Western Europe and Great Britain. Please let us know if you need any assistance with flight arrangements or tours.

If you happen to be traveling in or to Ukraine in the next few days, we should let you guys know that Ukraine’s Ministry of Emergencies reported that a train derailed on 16th July in Busk in the Lviv region in western Ukraine. There was a fire and this caused a chemical cloud which is drifting north over the Volyn region.

They’re advising people in the affected area to stay indoors and not to eat local produce. Tourists are being asked to stay away from the affected areas for a little while.

Update 20th July: The Ministry has now advised that this incident no longer presents a danger to travelers or residents in the area.
